What is the difference between psychotherapy & counselling?
The controlled act of psychotherapy works with "an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgement, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning" (Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991).

Psychotherapists often move between psychotherapeutic treatment and general counselling skills. Counselling may be used for specific goals, identifying important areas of change, and developing coping strategies. Psychotherapy tends to use the past and present to examine life's "big picture" issues in order to understand long-term issues, recurring patterns, and underlying feelings.
